Quality.Beauty.Security.

Every gate we build has three jobs: stand up to decades of coastal weather, look like it belongs to your home, and keep what's behind it safe. Our Red Seal certified team holds every weld, hinge and opener to that standard.

Two ways to work with us

Design something one of a kind, or choose a gate that's ready to install.

Not sure which path fits? Send us your driveway width and a photo — we'll tell you honestly which route makes sense for your property and budget.

Our story

A few builds we're proud of.

Every one of these started as a conversation. Seen something close to what you want? Ask for a quote on something similar.

Why aluminum

The coast is hard on gates. Aluminum doesn't care.

Salt air, wet winters and constant use will find every weakness in a steel or wood gate. Every custom product we build is 100% marine-grade aluminum — lighter on your hardware and to ship, and it will not rust.

  • Will not rust or rot

Marine-grade alloy plus powder coating handles coastal salt air year after year.

  • Lighter, so it lasts longer

Less mass means less strain on hinges, posts and automation — fewer service calls.

  • Finished in your colour

Powder coated locally at Coastal Powder Coat in Parksville — matched to your home, not a catalogue.

  • Pairs with wood beautifully

Cedar and metal accents give you warmth without the maintenance of an all-wood gate.

How it works

From the first measurement to the
first time it opens for you.

1

Consult & measure

We visit the site, measure the opening, check the slope and talk through how you actually use the driveway.

2

Design and draft

You get professional drawings and elevations, so you can see the gate on your property before we cut metal.

3

Fabricate in-house

Built by our Red Seal certified team in Parksville and powder coated locally — no offshore guesswork.

4

Install & automate

We set the posts, hang the gate, wire the LiftMaster system and show you how everything works.

One team, one point of contact, start to finish — no subtrades to chase.

Automation & access control

Open the gate from your phone,
from anywhere.

We're an authorized LiftMaster distributor, so the openers, intercoms and accessories we install are the ones we also stock, service and repair.

Solar-powered openers

No trenching, no power run to the road. Ideal for long rural driveways across the Island.

Smart video intercoms

See and talk to visitors, then open the gate from your phone with the LiftMaster CAPXS.

Keypads, remotes & myQ

Wireless keypads, remote fobs and myQ smart control, with photo-eye safety sensors.

Questions we hear a lot

Straight answers.

Still wondering about something? Call 250 248 2840 — we walk people through this every day.

Why aluminum instead of steel or wrought iron?

Steel and iron rust, and wood rots. Marine-grade aluminum with a powder-coated finish won't rust in coastal salt air, needs little more than an occasional wash, and is much lighter, so hinges, posts and gate openers work less hard and last longer. More on why we build with aluminum →

How much does a gate cost?

Custom gates are priced after a free consultation, because size, design, slope and finishes change from one property to the next. Stock gates have fixed prices in our shop: prefab driveway gates start at $2,299, before installation, automation and taxes.

How much does it cost to automate a gate?

LiftMaster opener kits in our shop start at $2,590 for a single swing gate, before installation and taxes. Solar-compatible kits, intercoms and keypads are extra. We can automate most existing gates too; ask for a quote.

Should I choose a custom gate or a stock gate?

If a stock size fits your opening and you like the style, a stock gate is the quicker, less expensive choice, and we'll say so. Custom makes sense for unusual widths, slopes, privacy needs or a design that's yours alone.

How long does it take, from order to install?

[West Coast Gates to confirm typical lead times for stock and custom gates, and how long an install usually takes on site.]

Do you ship gates off the Island?

Yes. Where we can't install, we build, package and ship. Because aluminum is light, shipping usually costs much less than people expect. Ask us for a shipping quote.

Can you fix a gate someone else built?

Yes. We're regularly called to repair, service or re-install gates and openers built by others. See our repair service and rates.

Do you build railings or marine work?

No. We focus on gates, fences and access systems. For boat work or complex railing projects, we'll happily refer you to a specialist.

About West Coast Gates

Built with care. Designed for your peace of mind.

West Coast Gates brings together certified expertise, quality materials, and a customer-first approach. From custom fabrication to smart access systems, we build gates that improve security and add value to your property while holding up to daily use.

A new chapter

Same quality. New approach.

West Coast Gates came under new ownership in Fall 2024. The Red Seal certified craftsmen who have built gates on the Island for over 15 years are still here. What's new is how we work with you: clear answers, honest advice, and a team that's easy to reach from first sketch to final install.

We'd rather tell you a stock gate is the smarter buy than sell you something you don't need. And when you call, you'll talk to people who know your project.

What sets us apart

Anyone can build a gate. We stand behind it.

Plenty of shops can weld a gate. Far fewer can design it for your driveway, install and automate it properly, and keep it running for years. That's what we do every day, and it's why we're regularly called to fix gates built elsewhere.

Our custom work is fabricated in-house in Parksville from 100% marine-grade aluminum, a specialized kind of welding usually found in the marine industry. Finishes are powder coated locally by Coastal Powder Coat Inc., and we're an authorized LiftMaster distributor for automation and access control.

HomeWhy aluminum?
The material

Why aluminum?

Aluminum has become the go-to choice for commercial, residential and agricultural properties across Canada. It's celebrated for exceptional durability, weather resistance and low maintenance: lightweight yet strong, malleable yet resilient.

Aluminum driveway gates on Vancouver Island

A better choice than wood, vinyl or wrought iron

The same properties that make aluminum ideal for everyday utensils, automotive parts and aircraft components make it ideal for gates and fencing. It withstands rain, snow and UV exposure, staying sturdy and attractive for years.

Whether you're after enhanced security, curb appeal or long-term value, aluminum offers the right blend of function and style. We design our aluminum solutions for the diverse needs of residential, commercial and industrial properties.

Residential

A blend of aesthetics, security and low maintenance. Styles, colours and heights to complement your home's architecture, whether that's a safe play area, secure pets or curb appeal.

  • Aesthetic appeal: sleek designs that enhance your property
  • Safety & security: durable and difficult to climb
  • Low maintenance: no painting or staining, just occasional cleaning

Commercial

A professional, polished appearance with security and durability, for retail properties, office complexes and public spaces that see heavy use.

  • Durability: resists rust, corrosion and UV damage
  • Customizable privacy: add finials and heavier posts for security
  • Cost-effective: none of the upkeep of wrought iron or wood

Industrial

Strength and durability for warehouses, factories and storage facilities, while its light weight simplifies installation and maintenance.

  • High security: difficult to cut or breach
  • Weather resistance: heavy snow to intense heat
  • Eco-friendly: recyclable, supporting sustainable practices
Benefits

The benefits of aluminum gates & fence panels

Rust-resistant & durable

Thanks to its anti-oxidation properties, aluminum doesn't rust, even in humid or wet conditions. Iron can't offer that.

Low maintenance

Panels are powder coated during manufacturing, so the colour stays vibrant for years without repainting.

Weather-resistant

Non-corrosive and highly durable through Canada's harsh winters, heavy rain and intense sunlight.

Customizable

Our in-house manufacturing lets us customize in ways others can't, from one-of-a-kind designs to posts pre-cut to a specific size or angle.

Aesthetic versatility

Malleable enough to fit any property shape or size, with colours and styles to complement your property.

Lightweight, easy to install & ship

Strong yet light, so it's easier to install than iron or wood, and far less expensive to ship off-Island than most people expect.

Eco-friendly

Aluminum is 100% recyclable, an environmentally friendly option for eco-conscious owners.

Maintenance

Keep your gate running

With any gate automation system, we recommend these periodic inspections. Refer to your user's manual for additional information.

Safety first: always shut off power and disconnect any backup batteries before servicing.
Linear actuators
  • Check wiring or tubing from the ground to the control box for signs of damage.
  • Check for loosened attachment points on both ends of the actuator arm(s).
  • Lightly lubricate the push/pull tube with a lithium spray (available locally). With the arm extended, wipe down the tube, spray, then retract the arm and remove any excess.
  • Check and test battery condition; replace if needed (every 3 years recommended). Always wear protective gloves and eyewear when handling batteries.
  • Inspect driveway gate operation.
  • Inspect gate leaf hinges and make sure they swing freely.
  • Inspect the gate for wear or damage.
  • Test safety accessories (e.g. photo eye sensors) to ensure they're functioning.
Sliding gates
  • Check gate and hardware for damage or wear and tear.
  • Test system operation and limits (where the gate travels to and from).
  • Test reversal stall force.
  • Test all accessories for proper function.
  • Test photo eye sensors and safety devices.
  • Check all wiring connections.
  • Test backup batteries and check voltage (replacement recommended after 3 years). Wear protective gloves and eyewear.
  • Lubricate drive chain and sprocket; adjust if required.
  • Check belt and pulley for excessive slack, wear or damage.
  • Check all fasteners.
  • Check rollers; adjust and/or tighten bolts if required.
Powder coat finish

Periodically wash gates, fence panels and posts with a mild detergent and soft cloth; more often near the ocean. If your gate is automated, take care not to saturate the electronics.

Don't use abrasive materials, as they may wear off the finish. Pressure washing is not recommended.
